What should I know about depression?

Depression is a diagnosable mental health condition that consists of unbearable sadness, despair, and hopelessness. If you are suffering from depression, a simple encouragement from family or friends won’t do the trick. You can’t just “get over” depression.

Don’t confuse a period of sadness following bad news with depression. You may need time to heal following these events, but if you have depression, you just can’t shake the feelings.

  • Headaches
  • Difficulties sleeping or sleeping too much
  • Weight loss or weight gain
  • Irritability
  • Increased or decreased appetite
  • Chronic aches and pains
  • Disinterest in activities that once brought you joy or pleasure
  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide

Depression can cause you to withdraw from loved ones. You may turn to drugs or alcohol for solace.

Why did I develop depression?

The exact reason that some people develop depression isn’t fully understood. Researchers believe that changes in neurotransmitters, chemicals in the brain that regulate mood, play a role.

Depression can develop when a person experiences a serious life event, like a failed relationship, the death of a loved one, or the loss of a job. People with chronic pain, persistent stress, and serious health problems may also experience depression.

Depression can also develop after a woman gives birth — a condition known as postpartum depression. Depression may also coexist with other mental health problems, including bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

What are the treatments for depression?

Dr. Ibeh recognizes that each person’s experience with depression is unique. She takes the time to get to know you, your symptoms, and factors that may contribute to your mental health. With your permission, she collaborates with your friends or family to help understand the root causes of your depression.

At telehealth visits, she helps you develop the tools to manage negative thoughts and emotions. Talk therapy helps you recognize and deal with depression triggers. With time, you learn ways to adjust your reactions and thinking when depression symptoms arise.

Dr. Ibeh can also prescribe medications that help adjust the balance of your brain chemicals. These medications increase your production of serotonin and dopamine.
