Call today or use this website to book your telehealth appointment.

Stimulant Policy: While stimulant medications like Vyvanse, Adderall, and Ritalin are typically the initial treatment for ADHD symptoms, they carry the potential for tolerance, dependency, and abuse, leading to strict control over their usage. In light of this, SALIENT HEALTH AND WELLNESS opts for non-stimulant medications, which have received FDA approval for treating ADHD in both adults and children. Our practice REFRAINS from prescribing stimulants but embraces the use of non-stimulant alternatives

What is ADHD?

ADHD, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a common neurodevelopmental disorder, usually first diagnosed in childhood. ADHD can last into adulthood.

You might be used to hearing the term ADD, or attention-deficit disorder. The term ADD is outdated and has included the “hyperactivity” term since 1987. However, people who do not have hyperactivity can still receive an ADHD diagnosis.

ADHD is characterized by behaviors that make it hard for a person to pay attention, sit still, or control impulsive behaviors.

What symptoms suggest ADHD?

Symptoms of ADHD vary from person to person. You don’t have to have all of these symptoms to be diagnosed with the condition:

  • Disorganization
  • Impulsiveness
  • Lack of attention to detail
  • Mood swings
  • Trouble multitasking
  • Difficulty prioritizing
  • Distractibility
  • Feelings of frustration often
  • Poor time and stress management

Children who have ADHD may get in trouble for talking a lot or have difficulty getting along with others. Adults with ADHD often lose items or have difficulty completing work tasks on time.

What causes ADHD?

ADHD doesn’t have a set cause, though certain factors do contribute to its development. Recently, studies have shown that ADHD may have a genetic link. Specific developmental issues that affect your nervous system may also play a role.

Factors in the environment, such as exposure to lead or other toxins, may contribute to the development of ADHD. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with ADHD, you need help managing the symptoms of hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention.
