What are the hallmark symptoms of bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder is characterized by having mania and depression.

Depression

Depression causes you to feel sad, low, or anxious. You may also feel tired, restless, and unmotivated. Depression is the most common symptom of bipolar disorder, but must also experience periods of mania or hypomania to be diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Mania

Mania, of feeling overjoyed, occurs when your mood is up. You feel happy and energetic, but also quick to anger or irritable. Some people with bipolar disorder experience episodes of feeling overconfident and full of energy (euphoria) that may lead to poor decision-making.

What should I know about bipolar disorder?

When a person has bipolar disorder, they experience periods of extreme depression alternated with periods of mania.

When depression hits, the person feels hopeless, empty, and full of self-loathing. Depression affects healthy sleep, eating, and mood. Some patients get so low during a depressive episode that they consider self-harm or suicide.

A period of mania is characterized by increased energy, impulsivity, and agitation. The manic behavior may lead a person to make rash judgments or unwise decisions, like blowing their bank account, having reckless sex, or driving uncontrollably.

Bipolar disorder is a serious mental health problem that requires management. Without help, a person with bipolar may endanger their relationships, work life, and health.

When should I seek treatment for bipolar disorder?

Getting patients with bipolar disorder the help they need can be tricky. When a person is in a manic state, they feel on top of the world. Even if their behavior is reckless, they don’t see it as such and are reluctant to seek care because they feel good.

A depressive bout can make a person feel so low that they don’t want to seek care. They may also have to deal with the repercussions of actions done during their manic state, such as debt, failed relationships, and job loss.

Without treatment, bipolar disorder persists and may get worse with time.

What causes bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder is not a choice. The condition is caused by chemical changes in your brain and often runs in families.
